Toxic Leadership

I haven't been blogging for quite a while and what has brought me back to it was a post on linkedin by a female member so the British Army about the way she was treated by a senior officer.  Essentially; disrespected, devalued and her contributions dismissed.  Even when we disagree with someone or decide not to accept their advice it should be done in a respectful way.

The most surprising thing about the incident was that Values Based Leadership has been at the core of Army leadership practise for over 2 decades.  So I am sure that the senior officer involved in this interaction was content that they were complying with the 6 core values that Army promotes.  However, values do not stand alon and they are underpinned by the Army's standards, acting Lawfully, in an Appropriate way and Professionally.  If I was searching for the cause of where this work relationship went off the rails I would start with standards.  After all many perpetrators in toxic cultures in both civilan and military life will firmly believe that they are acting in line with the corporate values, it is simply that they are not adhering to an agreed set of organisational standards.
